Horror Punk & Psychobilly

Description:

“Psychobilly is a weird and unusual fusion genre that never received much attention, although it has a recognizable sound and substantial subculture. In the late seventies, Punk/Garage artists were drawn towards Rockabilly. The mixture of these genres processed a remarkable outcome: creepy Rock ‘n’ Roll with haunting echos, spooky sound effects and rough chainsaw riffs. It is downright crazy music, like the band had lost their brain and became zombified, hence the word Psychobilly. Vocals are also often sung in a stuttering manner, reminiscent of Rockabilly.

Horror Punk or Horror Rock is a genre defined by a large amount of nostalgia for fifties imagery, fashion and themes and especially horror films. Horror Punk shares a great deal of overlapping with Psychobilly as both genres like to indulge in a subculture of B-flicks and cultmovies. Horror Punk and Psychobilly are among the few subgenres of Punk that don’t take themselves seriously (on the contrary), which explains a great deal of their popularity. Shortly after its birth, Psychobilly directly leads to the second wave of Garage Rock (a minor revival movement). Cowpunk or Country Punk (a lesser known Punk subgenre) can be seen as a further evolution of Psychobilly, merging with Alternative Country.” - Musicmap

Maggie’s Notes: This genre definitely fits it’s name, however I like it more than I thought I would. It’s fun to dance to because of it’s strong beat, but the lyrics can be odd.

When: 1949 Super Genre: Pop / Rock ‘n’ Roll   Description: “Skiffle is one of the oldest popular music genres. Emerging in the twenties in the United States, early Skiffle can be seen as a  Folk influenced form of Proto-Country ; just like Ragtime can be seen as Proto-Jazz and Gospel as Proto R&B. Jump Blues

When: 1940 Super Genre: Blues / (r&b) Description: “Shouting, clapping, backbeat, big bands…: Jump Blues is unmistakably the most swinging, optimistic and humorous type of Blues, a large contrast with some other Blues genres. When the rest of the world was concerned with WWII, the East Coast of the US seemed t o live in a happy bubble with this uptempo, bouncing, rolling, rumbling and tumbling music (and let's not forget jumping of course). But Jump Blues also became highly popular in the West Coast, where it was played at L.A.’s clubs and evolved into West Coast Blues. Honky Tonk/Hardcore

When: 1939 Super Genre: Country Description: “ Country before the forties had a bit of a multiple personality disorder. While one part of it evolved as a crazy, fun barn dance music, the other part went the opposite way. It evolved as an introvert, back-to-the-roots music that wasn’t happy at all, and often involved tragic ballads, known as Honky Tonk. Most Honky-Tonk songs deal about relationship problems, alcohol abuse, financial worries or other misfortune. Instead of large barns, this music was played in the more intimate bars of southern USA, which were called “honky-tonks”. However, honky tonks were still large enough to force the artist to implement electric instrumentation, in order to top the crowd volume-wise. Honky Tonk also introduced a steady 4/4 beat to Country Music, which diverted the genre from Folk. Honky Tonk artists often sang with a thick, southern tongueand in a nasal tone. Introducing Brinolia’s Genre Project

  For months now, Magnolia has been trying to wrap her mind around musical genres. Every time a new song comes on, she asks me what genre it is and recently she asked me “How many genres do you think we have on our record shelf?” So last night for our father-daughter date, we got real nerdy and looked up all of our albums on allmusic.com , wrote out genres and styles associated with each album on a sticky note and attached it to the record sleeve. From this exploration we’re going to compile some questions about unfamiliar genres and start having a “genre of the week” that we listen to, digging into various subgenres and having discussions about how each is different from similar/adjacent genres/subgenres. 🙂 We are starting this blog to record our progress and findings on our genre journey for ourselves to remember and for us to share with others who are interested.
